Endodontics is the branch of dentistry that deals with the study and treatment of dental pulp; it is one of the most common procedures when the tooth is deeply affected by dental caries.

Endodontics involves either preserving part or all of the healthy dental pulp or removing the entire pulp if it is irreversibly damaged. Endodontics not only involves the treatment of teeth with infected pulp tissue but also the preservation of teeth that have failed to respond to non-surgical endodontic treatment or teeth that have developed new lesions, for example, when re-treatment of the root canal is required or in periradicular surgery.

Root canal treatment involves, in most cases, removing the damaged and infected pulp, cleaning and disinfecting the entire canal, filling and sealing the root canal system, and placing a direct restoration such as a composite filling or an indirect restoration such as a dental crown.
